About the Business
Welcome to the Itosu-Kai Karate-do All Australia branch website. Located in the beautiful suburb of Panania, on Anderson Avenue, number 77, our institution is a point of interest for those seeking establishment and health.
At Itosu-Kai Karate-do Australia, we offer a unique opportunity to embark on a journey of friendship, physical fitness, and spiritual strength through the ancient and honorable art of Itosu-ryu Karate-do, also known as the Way of the Empty Hand.
Our institution provides both traditional Japanese karate and modern sports karate, catering to a wide range of preferences. Our focus lies in the mastery of kata (form), which encompasses the fundamentals of self-defense and sparring techniques. These experiences offer countless benefits to practitioners of all ages, fostering confidence, self-esteem, coordination, and resilience, particularly through the practice of kata.
With a presence in Australia for over three decades, Itosu-ryu has become a well-established and respected martial arts style in the country. This longevity can be attributed to our highly qualified and experienced teachers who ensure that classes are conducted safely and enjoyably. We understand that starting something new can be intimidating, but rest assured that all our members and instructors have experienced those initial feelings of uncertainty. As you join our community and begin learning the basics, you will quickly find yourself at ease, making friends and progressing in your karate journey.
It is essential to emphasize that karate-do is not just a physical discipline but also a character-building practice. Above all, karate begins and ends with respect, and this principle is deeply ingrained in our teachings. We aim to instill respect in our students, as we believe it is the foundation for personal growth and the development of strong relationships. As you progress in Itosu-ryu karate, you will find that the friendships, physical fitness, and spiritual strength you gain become indispensable in your pursuit of mastery. Unbeknownst to you, you will find yourself humbly serving humanity, courageously and compassionately navigating your place in this world.
Our institution pays tribute to the late Colin Leong, a highly respected figure in the world of Itosu-ryu Karate-do. Colin Leong, a 7th Dan Renshi Shihan, dedicated over four decades of his life to the practice and promotion of Itosu-ryu Karate-do. He was instrumental in bringing this martial art to Australia and played a significant role in the establishment of the Australian Karate Federation and the NSW Karate Federation. As a former World Karate Federation Referee and Judge, he participated in numerous world tournaments, promoting Itosu-ryu Karate-do through his expertise. Colin's son, Howard Leong, now carries on his father's legacy as the Head of Style at Itosu-kai Australia.
In addition to Howard Leong, we have a team of dedicated instructors who have been with Sensei Colin Leong since the early days. Sensei McDonald and Sensei Hoye, both long-serving students, teach at our Panania and Mooloolah dojos, respectively. Sensei Gregory, another direct student of Colin Leong, runs our Central Coast dojo. Their commitment and expertise ensure that our students receive the highest quality instruction.
With dojos in New South Wales and Queensland, we offer convenient training locations for students across Australia. To find out more about our classes and their schedules, please visit our website. We look forward to welcoming you into our Itosu-Kai Karate-do Australia community, where you will discover the transformative power of this ancient art form.
