About the Business
Welcome to the GI Cancer Institute, located in Camperdown, Australia. As an establishment and point of interest, we have been dedicated to changing outcomes for people with gastrointestinal (GI) cancer since 1991. Our mission is to improve treatments and survival rates for individuals affected by GI cancer.
Over the years, we have conducted 74 collaborative multidisciplinary clinical trials, providing over 8,800 people with access to new treatments at a faster pace. Our team of researchers, consisting of medical specialists, scientists, nurses, allied health professionals, and consumers, has grown to over 1,600 individuals. Together, we continue to develop new clinical trial concepts to enhance treatments, quality of life, and overall survival for our patients.
GI cancer is the most common cancer in Australia, directly impacting more than 34,291 Australians each year. Tragically, it claims the lives of 38 individuals every day. GI cancer encompasses various digestive organs, including the esophagus, stomach, liver, gallbladder and biliary tract, pancreas, large and small bowel, rectum, and anus.
Survival rates for those diagnosed with GI cancers are lower compared to other well-known cancers, with only a 51% chance of surviving five years. This is why our research and clinical trials are crucial. They offer immediate access to the latest treatments, improve survival odds, and enhance the quality of life during treatment for our patients.
Conducting clinical trials in Australia allows patients to access new treatments three to five years earlier than if they were conducted overseas. However, one of our biggest challenges is a lack of funding. Your support is vital in funding our research and ongoing clinical trials. You can make a difference by making a donation, becoming a regular giver, participating in a Gutsy Challenge trek, or organizing a community fundraiser.
At the GI Cancer Institute, we are committed to making a real impact in the lives of those fighting GI cancer. Join us in our mission to improve outcomes for patients and make a lasting difference in the fight against GI cancer. Together, we can save lives and create a brighter future for those affected by this devastating disease.
