About the Business
Welcome to the Crommelin Biological Field Research Station, located at Pearl Beach, Crystal Avenue, 75 in Australia. Our institution is a renowned establishment and a point of interest for individuals interested in exploring the fascinating world of biology.
At the Crommelin Biological Field Research Station, we delve into the intricate world of molecular mechanisms, whole organism processes, and ecosystem interactions. Our dedicated team of experts, including Associate Professors Tina Bell, Gary Muscatello, Catherine Herbert, Andrew Holmes, Feike Dijkstra, Marcus Heisler, Joy Becker, and Stephen Cattle, specialize in various fields such as Agriculture & Food, Ecology, Evolution & Conservation, and Molecules, Cells & Organisms.
As a part of the School of Life and Environmental Sciences, we offer access to state-of-the-art facilities. From biochemistry and genetics laboratories to plant breeding and ecology greenhouses, as well as veterinary hospitals, our facilities cater to a wide range of research needs. Additionally, we provide field facilities in diverse locations such as the Great Barrier Reef, dry sclerophyll forests, mangrove swamps, beaches, intertidal rock platforms, agricultural fields, and livestock farms.
Our institution conducts teaching and research activities not only on our campus in central Sydney but also at various other locations. These include farms and clinics in Camden, greater Sydney, a research station at One Tree Island on the Great Barrier Reef, the Crommelin Biological Field Station on the NSW Central Coast, and the Plant Breeding Institute at Narrabri in the grain-growing area of northern NSW. We also have access to facilities in major hospitals, medical research institutes, and veterinary clinics throughout Sydney and Australia.
One of our areas of expertise is fragment-based drug design (FBDD), a cutting-edge strategy for lead discovery. Instead of relying on large libraries of complex molecules, FBDD focuses on a curated library of small molecules, about half the size of typical drugs, leading to more efficient and targeted drug development.
Furthermore, we are proud to contribute to the agricultural industry by developing non-toxic methods to prevent mice from devouring wheat crops. Our research has shown significant reduction in seed loss, helping farmers protect their harvests.
Lastly, we find inspiration in the remarkable abilities of tiny ants. These seemingly insignificant creatures possess astonishing superpowers that make them formidable allies, serving as a reminder of the wonders of the natural world.
Join us at the Crommelin Biological Field Research Station and embark on a journey of discovery, where we explore the intricate web of life and contribute to scientific advancements in the field of biology.
