About the Business
Welcome to Barrenjoey Lighthouse, located at Barrenjoey Head in Palm Beach, Sydney's stunning northern beaches. This historic lighthouse, built in 1881, is a beloved Sydney landmark and a must-visit tourist attraction.
Perched 91 meters above sea level, Barrenjoey Lighthouse offers breathtaking views that can be reached by a couple of scenic walks. It's the perfect day trip from Sydney, and an ideal spot to bring overseas visitors who may recognize the lighthouse from the popular TV show, Home and Away. They'll also find the Summer Bay Surf Club nearby.
This iconic lighthouse holds great cultural significance and is constructed from sandstone quarried on-site. Its original stone finish remains intact, giving it a timeless charm. The lighthouse, along with its oil room and keepers' cottages, stands as a testament to Australia's rich heritage.
To reach the lighthouse, you can take an easy and picturesque 1-kilometer walk along Barrenjoey track. This walk is suitable for all fitness levels and takes about 30 minutes each way from the Governor Phillip parking area. For a more challenging hike, you can choose to take Smugglers track instead. This track, built by customs officers in the 1850s, offers a steeper and shorter trek to the lighthouse, but the stunning views at the top make it well worth the effort.
Don't forget to bring your binoculars between May and September for whale watching. Alternatively, capture the panoramic views of Broken Bay, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, and the Central Coast with your camera.
Entry to Barrenjoey Lighthouse is free, but please note that street parking may require a fee. For more detailed directions, safety information, and practical tips, please refer to our visitor info section.
Unleash your sense of adventure and experience the beauty of Barrenjoey Lighthouse. You don't have to travel far to find your next great escape – these dream beach and mountain getaways are just moments away from Sydney.

"This place is amazing. We went in the morning. The view is amazing and the air is so fresh you'll feel it. There are stairs to go up and also there is a route to go up for maybe ambulant people and aged who can't climb stairs. This place is perfect for a vacation with friends or family. They have drinking water and also restrooms all the way up near the lighthouse. Overall a great visit."
"Lovely place for a sort day trip. Make sure the day is nice and sunny to enjoy the view fully. You can enjoy a guided tour up the Lighthouse for $10 per person, and you get to go up the main tower."
"Stunning views for a relatively easy hike! Didn’t go in the lighthouse just walked around. If you have good mobility/stability I recommend going up one path and down the other to soak up all the views."
"Beautiful walk up to the lighthouse - spectacular views and many “instagram” moments. The “Smuggler’s Track” that veers to the right at the bottom is quite steep and full on steps, while it is easier and less inclined on the “access track” (that looks like vehicles can actually drive up). You can do a round trip walking up one and down the other. Awesome day out for families, friends or couples, or just to have some “me time”."
"This is one of my favorite place, nice and romantic walk around the beach then you have to do a bit exercise by climbing the mountain along the track walk. For just 15-20 minutes walk then you can reach the Lighthouse."
