About the Business
Welcome to Saravanaa Bhavan, the largest South Indian vegetarian restaurant chain in the world. Located at 131 King Street in Melbourne, Australia, our establishment is a must-visit for food enthusiasts and those seeking a unique dining experience.
With over 33 outlets in India, including 20 in Chennai, and 47 branches across various countries such as Australia, UK, France, Germany, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, United States, Canada, and the Middle East, Saravanaa Bhavan has become synonymous with exceptional vegetarian cuisine. We take pride in offering world-class South Indian dishes that cater to both vegetarian and vegan preferences.
The story of Saravanaa Bhavan dates back to 1981 when Rajagopal opened a small grocery shop on the outskirts of Chennai. From these humble beginnings, he embarked on a remarkable culinary adventure that brought the flavors of South India to the global stage. By the 1990s, Saravanaa Bhavan restaurants had become a staple in Chennai neighborhoods, and in 2000, the chain expanded internationally with its first franchise in Dubai. Today, you can find our branches in cities like Paris, Frankfurt, London, New York City, Dallas, Toronto, Stockholm, Doha, and Auckland.
At Saravanaa Bhavan, we offer a diverse menu that showcases the richness and authenticity of South Indian cuisine. Indulge in our deep-fried mini idly sautéed in regional spices and served with raitha, or savor our mixed flavored rice dish, prepared by layering biryani gravy and basmati rice in a flat-bottom vessel. Our thin, long rice and lentil crepes, served with sambar and three varieties of chutneys, are a delightful treat. Don't miss out on our big, fluffy fried bread served with channa masala or the thick rice and lentil pancake topped with onion and green chili, served with chutneys and sambar.
For those looking for a complete meal experience, we offer set menus that include starters like Paneer 65, Gobi 65, Chilly Mushroom, and Chilly Paneer, followed by a choice of soup such as Rassam Soup. You can then choose four main dishes from options like Veg Fried Rice, Paneer Fried Rice, Hakka Noodles, Mushroom Manchurian, and more. Finish off your meal with delectable desserts like Gajar Halwa, Gulab jamun, Paysam, or Rava Kesari.

"Reliable. Delicious. Impeccable service. Not your usual Indian. Vegetarian. The menu is extensive and though you can browse and order online whilst seated on your table, not all dishes have photos so ask. The names for those of us not too familiar with Indian regional cuisines are unusual. The staff are very friendly and attentive and the manger took all needed time to explain the dishes we asked about. I go there very often."
"No booking taken. This place is always busy. Food is good with good portions sizes. Ambience is plain, noisy, rushed and impersonal. It’s a busy place so would be hard to keep up. Not throughly impressed with the service but would go back for the food."
"Food was very very good, and service was even better. On some days the wait was crazy as we went during the cricket world cup and there were a lot of Hungry Indians just like us. But the food was so good we went to eat 4-5 times in the 7-8 days we were there."
"Make sure you book a table before you go for dine in specially at the weekends. We did walk in and the restaurant was fully booked. There was a queue. Had to wait. Luckily we got our table early. The restaurant got renovated recently with new furniture and more sitting capacity. Staff was really nice and accomodating. Despite being the restaurant super busy, staff was trying their best to help and serve customers. Coming on to the food. The quality of food has lowered down. That’s the only reason for not giving five stars. Please get back the old food quality. It’s a 100% pure vegetarian restaurant with both South Indian and North Indian options. Kids combo is pretty good. Thali combos are available too. Nice place to try South Indian food."
