About the Business
Welcome to The Blackwood Project, located in Rooty Hill, Gardner Street, Australia. We are an establishment, point of interest, and store specializing in Japanese charred and Charred and Brushed timber finishes for building projects in both New Zealand and Australia.
At The Blackwood Project, we are proud to offer Shou Sugi Ban, the traditional Japanese art of fire conditioning timber. Our unique selling point is our weather channel protection technology, ensuring that our charring finishes are not only visually stunning but also weather tight, backed by our guarantee.
We provide multiple finishes and timbers on a commercial scale, allowing for shorter turnaround times. All of our products are produced in Waikato, New Zealand, and are delivered nationwide to both Australia and New Zealand.
Yakisugi, also known as Shou Sugi Ban, is a traditional Japanese method of wood preservation. By charring naturally durable timber, this ancient technique creates a hard-wearing, long-lasting, and low maintenance charred timber finish. Not only does this finish offer practical benefits, but it also adds a sleek and stylish touch to any project. We offer three main finishes for Yakisugi: the traditional full char, the charred and brushed, and the charred and double brushed, which allows for the introduction of light-colored stains.
Before incorporating yakisugi cladding into our timber business, we traveled to Japan to witness the process and see the product in its traditional setting. We were impressed by the masters' craftsmanship and the longevity of yakisugi, with examples over 120 years old still looking great today. As timber professionals, we recognized the excellent benefits of the yakisugi process, making the timber stronger, more stable, and virtually maintenance-free.
With the knowledge we gained in Japan, we began experimenting with different burning techniques for yakisugi. After countless hours and meters of timber, we made significant progress. Since 2018, we have been proud to offer Yakisugi Japanese charred cladding.
Having worked in the timber milling business for years, we noticed a growing interest in finishes that reduce the maintenance requirements of timber cladding. Japanese burnt timber addresses this issue, providing a unique and durable solution.
