The Superintendent's Residence Parkes Drive, Centennial Park, New South Wales 2025
About the Business
Welcome to The Superintendent's Residence, a charming establishment located in Centennial Park, Australia. This Victorian-style residence, designed by colonial architect James Barnet, is a true gem that showcases the historical charm of the nineteenth century.
Built from sandstone quarried directly from the site, The Superintendent's Residence offers a picturesque view down Parkes Drive and across Centennial Park to the suburbs beyond. Its single storey structure features a slate roof, timber floors, and a corrugated iron verandah, exuding elegance and old-world charm.
Over the years, this residence has undergone various renovations and additions. In 1907, an additional sandstone bedroom and weatherboard bathroom were constructed under the direction of renowned Government Architect Walter Vernon. In 1940, the Department of Agriculture implemented a program to address deteriorating paintwork and woodwork, ensuring the preservation of this historic building.
Despite facing challenges such as white ant infestation and hail damage, The Superintendent's Residence has stood the test of time. It has served as a home for gardeners, laborers, foremen, and Park rangers, and from 1993 to 1995, it was occupied by Park Administration. In 2001, conservation works were carried out to protect the building's significant heritage features, allowing it to be opened to the public for the first time.
Previously serving as the Parklands' Visitor Information Centre, The Superintendent's Residence now stands as a testament to Australia's rich history. It has been listed as an item of environmental heritage by various authorities and organizations, including the Randwick Local Environmental Plan 1998 and the National Trust of Australia (NSW).
Today, visitors can explore the interior of The Superintendent's Residence and admire the beautiful examples of original workmanship that have been preserved. From the rich, vibrant internal color scheme with a gold leaf dado to the intricate details throughout the building, every corner tells a story of Australia's past.
As part of Centennial Parklands' commitment to preserving this historic building, The Superintendent's Residence stands as a reminder of the heritage and culture that Australia holds dear. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply looking for a unique lodging experience, The Superintendent's Residence offers a glimpse into the past while providing modern comfort and amenities.
Come and experience the charm of The Superintendent's Residence, where history comes alive in the heart of Centennial Park.

"It is such a lovely spot here. We held an event for Marriage Equality at The Residences and not only were the team super supportive, they were fabulous! To be honest, it was my first time stepping into the property having driven past it countless times. The cottage itself is OMG-AH-MAZING! And for smaller events (including weddings), you really cannot go wrong here! LOVE LOVE LOVE! Thank you Nadia!"
