At Lort Smith, we go beyond veterinary care. We are proud advocates of the human-animal bond and have a unique legacy of compassion for pets and people in our community. Our 2022 Impact Report is now available to read, showcasing how we have adapted and transformed to meet the needs of the community. It also highlights the wonderful ways in which you contribute to the health, safety, and happiness of Melbourne's beloved animals.
Located in Melbourne's medical precinct, our emergency animal hospital and vet clinic provide critical care for sick and injured animals, as well as routine clinical services. We are centrally located for easy access during emergencies. Additionally, we have recently opened a brand new purpose-built vet clinic, adoption centre, and community dog park 16 kilometers north of Melbourne's CBD. This expansion allows us to serve even more pets and people in need.
If you have an emergency, please bring your pet to Lort Smith at 24 Villiers Street, North Melbourne. In case it is outside our opening hours, we have a list of 24-hour clinics for your reference.
You can also make a lasting impact on animal welfare by leaving a Gift in your Will to support animals in need. Your legacy will help us continue our vital work in caring for and protecting animals.
Our adoption centre in Campbellfield rehomes approximately 600 surrendered animals each year. If you are considering adopting a pet, we encourage you to carefully read the 'before you adopt' section on our website.
At Lort Smith, countless colorful interactions occur every day. While our community is incredibly diverse, we all share a common love for our pets and a deep respect for the human-animal bond.
We would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation, on which we work. We pay our respects to Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Lort Smith values and celebrates diversity in our community. We are committed to providing animal care services that are inclusive, supporting equality and accessibility.

"Thank you so much for looking after Finn. He is doing well! The reception, nurse and vet were very warm and helpful with their explanations. There were some delays with phone updates etc over the 2 days but it’s very understandable with how hectic things are there."
"I found a paralysis tick on my dog, and then another 5, local vet had no anti serum which is required. The staff were compassionate, reassuring, professional and quick with their opinion of what needed to happen to ensure my dog didn't die. I was offered the option of paying 50% up front and the rest on a payment plan (final bill was itemised ) They found another 4 on her. She is home safely and I am so incredibly grateful."
"Huge thank you to the Lort Smith Animal Hospital. Especially to Dr Harry who was so kind and gentle when we had to say goodbye to our 17 year old cat Merlin today. You were so respectful to us in our grief. We won't ever forget. Also thank you to the lovely lady at reception for your soft ind words. So very much appreciated. ❤️"
"Really appreciate the care from the vets at the emergency service. My pup stayed there for 5 nights due to very serious illness and thanks to their great care, he made a full recovery. Thank you so much. Also I love the giant flea balloon hung at the reception. Way to go!"
