Asukatei is a renowned restaurant that has been serving delicious sushi and food for over a decade. Many loyal customers, like myself, have fond memories of this place and its mouthwatering offerings.
Stepping into Asukatei today, I was thrilled to find that the food is just as delectable as I remembered. I indulged in their hand rolls, which were packed with fresh ingredients and bursting with flavor. The takoyaki, a beloved Japanese snack, was also a highlight of my visit – perfectly crispy on the outside and filled with a savory octopus filling.
Asukatei has managed to maintain its status as a favorite in Balwyn, and it's no surprise why. This small restaurant, run by a couple, exudes a warm and inviting atmosphere. While the cook may take a bit of time to prepare your meal, rest assured that the taste is well worth the wait.

"Tired looking joint. Went there for early and quick dinner. Ordered gyu-don and katsu-don. Pretty average fare. Katsu-don tasted like any other Japanese food joint run by non-Japanese. Gyu-don’s beef was a bit tough and rice was swimming in mirin/soya sauce. The only plus is the price. Very reasonable."
"Great Japanese food especially the Bento Boxes. Great price's too. Little restaurant with no real "atmosphere" but it's a good local ."
"Tempura prawn handrolls are a staple whenever I visit and I've been coming here for over 12 years now. Prices have slowly risen (as we all know in 2023) but the quality of the food has maintained. Love this place and hope it's around for at least another 12 years. Parking around the corner behind the petrol station. Has 4 tables that can sit 2-3 people so has usually been a takeaway option."
"Cook is a bit slow, but the taste is worthy of the waiting time. Small restaurant ran by a couple. Good combination of food within the Bento box."
"Disappointed. I ordered the large chirashi sushi for lunch for $16 and although was adequate, it lacked imagination. The sashimi slices were very thin, and I think the large portion just meant more rice. There was salmon, a couple of tuna and kingfish pieces, couple of thin tamago slices and an avocado which I thought was out of place. Wished there was more variety (eg unagi, salmon roe, grilled tuna/salmon, etc)… Also I witnessed an old lady order take away who was frustrated with the wait time that she requested a refund. I believe the customer is within their right to do this and the business should respect the decision, but instead insisted her to wait and advised her order was coming within minutes. I found this uncomfortable and unacceptable."
