"DIY and reap the Benefits We sold our home in St Clair, NSW some years ago using the web services of PropertyNow and have nothing but praise and gratitude for this service. They gave us all the advice and support we needed through the entire process and advertise on all the major websites. Prior to that we interviewed all the local agents and were thoroughly unimpressed with any of them! They were horrified when advised that one option we were exploring was to sell privately without an Agent. Responses were "Oh no you cannot do it as you are not professional" (expensive suits and fancy cars?!) and "You will get emotional and would be unable to negotiate the best deal". We did it ourselves, selling on the first weekend by Appointment Only. No Open Homes when every man and his dog wants to have a sticky beak and the Agent will brag about how many they attracted due to their “superior” advertising!! We got $110,000 more than the average potential sale value estimated by most of the Agents interviewed and saved over$ 25000 in agent's commission. This was without any of the expensive refits/upgraded suggested by the Agents who said our kitchen and bathrooms were “dated”! It cost us at the time $450 to list with PropertyNow and another $150 for a professional photographer. We learned that Agents only care about a quick sale at whatever price they can get to make a commission and move on to the next. There's no one better qualified to show your house to potential buyers than you the owner. If it's well presented and competitively priced it will sell - that's the key to a good result. You still need to get your own Solicitor to draw up contracts and deposits are paid direct to the Solicitor so it's at arm’s length. When we were in the market to buy another home, we discovered how little Agents know of the houses they are entrusted to sell. If the owners knew they would be horrified – of course they are not present when an Agent shows their home to prospective buyers! The whole real estate business is the last of the dinosaurs not affected by opportunities on the internet with people too worried to sell themselves. Do yourself a favour and consider selling yourself cutting out the incompetence of real estate agents and getting the return you deserve for your biggest asset."
