Charing Cross Hotel 81 Carrington Road, Waverley, New South Wales 2024
About the Business
Welcome to the Charing Cross Hotel, located in the beautiful area of Bronte on Sydney's eastern beaches. This contemporary gastro pub is influenced by modern European and Australian cuisine, offering a unique dining experience for locals and visitors alike.
The history of the Charing Cross Hotel dates back to its initial construction by Irish convict William Newland, who gained his freedom in 1833. With a £600 loan, he built what would become the first hotel in the area. The hotel played a significant role in the community, serving as the first council meeting place and even inspiring the name of Newland Street, where the Waverley Council's Bondi Junction office is located.
Today, the Charing Cross Hotel has undergone a rejuvenation, becoming a seamless drinking and dining venue that showcases fine local produce and a wide variety of craft beers, ciders, and wines. Affectionately known as the 'Charo,' this establishment boasts an award-winning menu available in multiple spaces throughout the hotel.
Whether you're looking for a casual catch-up with friends, a birthday celebration, or a family reunion, the Charing Cross Hotel has you covered. We cater for groups of all sizes in both exclusive and non-exclusive spaces throughout the venue. Our bar area can accommodate up to 300 people, with various seating options to suit your group's needs. With flat-screen TVs showing the latest sports events and live entertainment from Thursday to Sunday, there's always something happening at the Charo.
For those looking to dine, our bistro and cocktail parlour offer online table bookings, but we also welcome walk-ins in these areas, as well as the public bar and beer garden. Our dining room comfortably accommodates 50-60 guests, and we even have a private dining room on the first floor for up to 24 guests. Our team has curated unforgettable sharing menus, providing a memorable dining experience for all.
If you're planning to stay overnight, the Charing Cross Hotel features eight recently renovated first-floor rooms with ensuite bathrooms. Each room is equipped with new mattresses, large flat-screen TVs, fridges, and a modern coastal feel in the decor.
Conveniently located just 1km from Bronte and Tamarama beaches, as well as Bondi Junction and the famous Bondi Beach, the Charing Cross Hotel is the perfect base for exploring Sydney's iconic attractions. Additionally, we are only a short 15-minute drive from the Sydney Cricket Ground and Randwick Racecourse, making us an ideal choice for sports enthusiasts. "The no frills frozen pizzas from Coles have more flavour. Criminal that you think you can charge 25 bucks a pizza for things that arent worth 5."
"The staff went out of their way to check me in even though I was way past the hotel check in window. The room was fantastic, clean and comfortable. The only big downside was the lack of heating on a very cold Sydney Winter night"
"Sunday Roast was rubbish, Pork crackling was soft and under done, potatoes were meant to be roasted and were wet and soggy (wrong potato variety used - stupid), carrots and parsnips were steamed not roasted or honey glazed, the Yorkshire pudding was burnt to a crisp. At $32+ I really would expect more for a pub supposedly known for its “Sunday Roast”. When we complained the staff said they would tell the chef, never returned so presumably he could care less. 4 meals with Friends all were the same quality."
"When you enter the hotel, nice, warm and welcoming environment plus the atmosphere and happening vibe was a big tick. Came before 6 pm and this place was packed and can’t get any empty table. My sirloin roast was good, love the Yorkshire pudding, and the trimming was roasted nicely. Personally don’t like the cauliflower and potato can use more salt. Lamb roast a little bit chewy, and even though mint sauce was runny however it was great condiment for the lamb. All this yumminess was was down with young hendri “naturally brew” on tap."
"Room was disgusting. Stained sheets. No base sheet. Splatter on the wall of who knows what, open sugar packets. The list goes on. What offered a free meal and drink and when we went to cash that in was met with a hostile manager who said verbatim “you be nice to us, we will be nice to you” very threatening. Security guard even got involved because this manager was getting hostile. Partial refund was also offered and after following up, I have been ignored and doubt we will ever see that partial refund. Great place for an evening out but do not recommend staying there."
