"Cottages clean and cosy Olga was very helpful Area isolated but very peaceful Would recommend for family trips"
"This was our 4th & last visit to these cottages which have deteriorated rapidly since last year. We stayed over the bank holiday weekend 4-7 May 2018 having booked cottage No1. On arrival the first thing we noticed was that the cottages at the top of the complex were completely boarded up. We found cottage No1 was locked & on looking through the windows we could see that the beds hadn't been made up. We phoned the owner who told us to take either No4 or No8 - as we had stayed in No8 previously & didn't really like it, we chose No4. On entering the cottage, it was evident that it was freezing, damp and smelled really fusty. We couldn't turn the heating on as there was no oil so first stop was to the supermarket in Drumshanbo to get a supply of wood, coal, peat, air freshener and bleach. With the fire lit & the room starting to warm, the moisture in the air was settling on the floor making it like a skating rink which didn't dry out until the next morning. Olga arrived for the remainder of the payment while her husband poured 2 containers of oil into the tank. We asked why the place had become so run down & were told that there was a problem with the owner but she didn't really know what was going on. As we continued to settle in, the list of problems we encountered was endless. The inside of the fridge and freezer had black mould on them & there was a black bag in the freezer containing what we think was ice, the dishwasher smelled rank & when we tried to clean it using the hottest cycle we got an error code which we later discovered was the heating element wasn't reaching the required temperature [this was the same for every cycle we tried] thus rendering it unusable, black mould on the cooking utensils, there was no water coming out of the hot tap in the ensuite while the water from the shower in the downstairs wet room flowed under the saddle board across the floor of the dining area to the front door, broken slats on one of the beds & in another bedroom graffiti on the walls and furniture & black mould on the walls, the bins in the disposal area were overflowing [this despite the complex being vacant from last October], the games room was locked so no wifi all weekend. When we reported this we got excuse after excuse e.g. when we said about the bed slats we were told that sometimes the children jump on the beds & break them - that's not my problem, just get it fixed!! The owner did tell Olga to give us a €100 refund but she quickly took €40 back for heating and electric which seemed extremely high as we had spent all day Saturday in Carrick-on-Shannon and all day Sunday sitting outside as it was a real scorcher and at night we used the open fire. We emailed the owner on our return home but sadly we didn't get a reply until after I put a review on Tripadvisor. The manager responded saying that my review was unfair & they took pride on themselves for the standards they maintain so this time I'm including photos so the public can decide for themselves. The cottage has been given one star only because I couldn't give it any less but in reality it is unrateable!!"
