"I went to downdwrry and I think the teachers are great and they all helped me achieve good level in my work"
"We went to the Parents' Open Day and found the senior leadership team remote and unwilling to engage. We were shown around in one group of 35 parents (and babies) and were not able to get into the Reception Class to hear what was being said. When this was pointed out to the gentleman from SLT, he said we should "just push our way in". Instead of kids' work they have posh plaques with their run of the mill Mission Statement on the inside of their classroom doors - I guess to be pretentious rather than because the kids will be able to understand it... none of the parents read it. The presentation was about how to make sure they could claim our money from Pupil Premium, and how much the uniform costs as well as a stern warning about bad attendance - which he later lied about claiming, under pressure from parents, that it was 98% (national average 95.5% and this was a weakness at their last OFSTED). Being able to try the lunch was nice. They have a room full of Macs rather then pcs, which I imagine will impress some people... as will the swimming pool. For us, we wanted to know how they support children who are finding work too difficult or too easy and what the aims are for the next few years.... on a basic level, we wanted to know they wanted to inspire children... and we did not get that at all. All we got was a defensive SLT and when we asked for 20 minutes with the Head, who had been unable to speak at the event... we were told to look on the website as this wasn't something she did - I am not kidding. She said that if we had any concerns or questions, we could raise them AFTER our child got into the school - as if.... Remote, defensive, unwilling to learn and dismissive. A real disappointment as it is our local school. Following the phone call with the Head, we felt they had decided we might challenge and so were actively trying to discourage us from applying - and they have succeeded... we will not be putting them in our top 6. We want a school that we can get engaged with, fundraise for and support to make the community better. Appalling attitude, and the teachers looked miserable compared to other schools."
