"I was sceptical of Taro, because Walthamstow is home to a few hipster restaurants serving the latest food fad at inflated prices. But I was more than happy to be proved wrong - the food was delicious (I had ramen, my wife had sushi and my daughter had a kids meal that was bigger than her head) and it's reasonably priced, coming in slightly cheaper than Wagamama or Tonkotsu. The service could have been quicker, but I suspect that's teething problems and will soon be ironed out."
"Just the venue is worth the visit itself, a beautiful traditional pie and mash shop that will wow any nostalgia lover. The food is delicious but quite standard Japanese. We had vegetarian bento, salmon Makimono, seaweed salad and of course The Walthamstow roll, all yum. Edamame was somehow not as tasty as usual. The booking system needs improvement as there was a lot of people begging for a table including us. We did get lucky though, so lucky us! The table near the door is seriously freezing :)"
"Very nice food and a warm welcome on a Sunday afternoon at Taro in Walthamstow. We arrived at around half twelve and found a seat easily - by one the place was full and a queue began to form after that. The room is lovely - Taro has preserved the old pie and mash cafe beautifully, and the food is nice too. We had a little hand roll, some edamame and vegetable tempura to start. Mains were a vegetable noodle dish, vegetable katsu and salmon teriyaki. The Katsu was reported to be a little bland but everything else was really tasty. Total with soft drinks and a pot of tea was roughly £70, so definitely not pie and mash prices, but well worth a trip and we enjoyed our meal."
"This used to be a pie and mash restaurant. I tried it for the first time today and I have to say that I wasn’t impressed at all. I ordered chicken yakisoba noodles and my wife ordered tempura sushi. The sushi arrived very late. The staff are respectful and kind but I’ve tried better Asian food in other places."
"A little renovated restaurant with stalls for each table. Lovely atmosphere. We came in for lunch right after they opened and the owner greeted us in a very humble and friendly way. We had ramen, takoyaki, and their signature dish chicken teridon. Everything was super tasty and well cooked! We’ll be back often!"
